these days, nick's center of gravity often feels absent, lingering beyond him and the different life he lives. he walks, but his feet don't quite touch the earth beneath him; he reaches out, but his fingers grasp at nothing. the days blend together. often, he spends his time counting birds in the sky, using every feather as proof beyond himself that hours, days, and months still pass. they act as markers of distance: birds he saw three years ago are not the birds he sees today. the man he was three years ago is not the man he is today.[break][break]

in many ways, it is a comforting notion. in many other ways, however, it is terrifying, in a way that nick has yet to place his finger on.[break][break]

nonetheless, the ritual continues, and the world turns, with or without him.[break][break]

the sky pillar rises before him now, a monolith of stone and sky, a place where the wind never ceases to howl. birds roost upon its heights, a sanctuary for those who can fly, for those who are not bound by the earth. nick's breath comes in short, uneven gasps as he climbs, his eyes fixed on the summit. he has no destination in mind, no final goal—only the endless search for something beyond the reach of his hands. maybe, if he is lucky, he can see some birds he has yet to see.[break][break]

he reaches the top as the sun begins to set, casting long shadows across the stone. the birds are here, as they always are, their wings catching the last light of day. nick raises his camera, his gloved hands trembling slightly as he snaps photo after photo, noting down each species in his head in silence.

The Sky Pillar offers itself as a place of solitude. A natural roost for the spectral, the draconid, the avian. Lam hasn’t had the opportunity to visit the ruin that rises straight into the sky like a gateway to all that wide open space. Not all that often. The rip in reality’s fabric ripples across the sky even further above the pillar.[break][break]
He’s used it to traverse the gap between here and there—the ruined, decrepit city on the other side. But today he doesn’t climb the spiraling stone steps for the sake of alien exploration. This visit is a collectively held breath being released. Respite from the region and its steadily unfolding turmoil.[break][break]
In his rucksack is a sketchbook. Soft pencils. Some birdseed. Draped around his neck, a set of binoculars.[break][break]
The natural aviary offers him the chance to return to a hobby that he’s sorely missed. Birding calms him, it has ever since he was small. It offers him the opportunity to disconnect and he be no more than a blurred part of the scenery.[break][break]
The wind picks up the higher he climbs, but he catches the sound of shutter clicks over the whistling as he reaches the topmost floor. It’s a nauseating height, but Lam has never minded it all too much. “Can’t say I was expecting to find anyone else up here,” he says to the figure off to the side—a way to announce his presence.[break][break]
No one except for the birds, of course.

the sound of another's voice is enough to startle nick from his quiet reverie. it's been so long since he's heard someone else speak in this sacred space, he'd almost forgotten what it was like to share it with someone other than the birds and the wind.[break][break]

he lowers his camera, the shutter still trembling from the last capture, and turns to face the newcomer. the man is younger than nick by at least a decade, with choppy green hair that dances wildly around his face in the fierce breeze. there's something familiar about him, too, though nick can't quite put his finger on what it is. perhaps it's just the shared love for birds and the solace of solitude.[break][break]

"i could say the same for you," nick says with a wry smile, his voice soft and gravelly from disuse. "it's not often i find another soul up here who isn't feathered."[break][break]

he tucks his camera into the folds of his bright orange puffer jacket, the material crinkling noisily in the quiet air. "i'm nick," he says, extending a gloved hand towards the stranger. "you are...?"[break][break]

his eyes flick briefly to the sketchbook peeking out of the man's rucksack, the binoculars around his neck. a fellow birder, perhaps? or just another lost soul seeking solace at the top of the world?

as he speaks, it isn't without an immediate, but slight, pang of regret as the stranger startles. as he turns, lam smiles apologetically. a hand rises, carding through the bright, messy green of his hair. "my bad - wasnt' sure what the best way to announce myself.." he laughs, and the sound is sheepish. maybe a little self-effacing.[break][break]
after all, it might've been worse if he'd said nothing at all and was simply there at the next turn like many of the ghosts that also came here to roost.[break][break]
he can't say he recognizes hum, but what lam does know is another bird enthusiast when he sees one. "i hear that, though. usually the only sorts i find up here are the feathered variety."[break][break]
his eyes fix on the camera for a fleeting moment, then jump back to the other's face. "lam logan," he replies easily, shifting the bag on his shoulder a bit as his posture slouches in relaxation. he's off duty so he leaves out the formality of his title within the league.[break][break]
it's nice to not be immediately recognized sometimes, even if not for long. he gives a slight nod to the disappeared camera. "any good shots up here today?" for all lam knows, though, nick isn't here for the birds despite his assumption. maybe it's for the killer view and panoramic angles.
